On Saturday, May 24, Ambassador Javier Yépez, Director of Plan Binacional for the Peru-Ecuador Border Region, visited the archaeological site of Montegrande, in Jaén, Cajamarca, together with archaeologist Quirino Olivera, Director of Huaca Montegrande. The visit seeks to strengthen institutional support to this important site of more than 5,300 years old, where the oldest cacao in the world was discovered, in parallel with similar findings in Palanda, Ecuador.

The ambassador reaffirmed support for research, including a recent agreement that finances the carbon-14 analysis of 16 pieces in the U.S., with a view to discovering key figures of the ancient Andean-Amazonian civilization.
During the tour, Dr. Olivera presented the most recent advances in the excavations and highlighted the scientific and cultural value of the site. For his part, Ambassador Yépez emphasized that Plan Binacional will continue to finance specialized studies and promote the visibility of Montegrande nationally and internationally, thus consolidating its commitment to the preservation of the shared historical heritage between Peru and Ecuador.

Huaca Montegrande is initiating a new phase of research and excavations in the center of the spiral, which could shed new lights on the personage of greater religious hierarchy of the temple.
