This academic handbook offers up-to-date information on South American archaeology, bringing together contributions from archaeologists, museum specialists, and researchers currently active in field and laboratory work. The book covers topics ranging from the origins of pottery and pre-Hispanic trade networks to contemporary theoretical approaches. It also highlights the use of diverse data sources, including genetics, bioanthropology, human evolution, history, and paleoclimate, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of modern archaeology in South America.

Chapter 43, titled Early evidence of trade across the Andes between the Pacific and the Amazon, is authored by Dr. Quirino Olivera (ASICAMPE), lead archaeologist and director of research at Huaca Montegrande in Peru, and Dr. Francisco Valdez, lead archaeologist and researcher at Palanda archaeological site in Ecuador.

Organized around eight major themes, the handbook includes 77 chapters covering regions from the Caribbean to Tierra del Fuego, with special focus on recent discoveries in the Amazon. The book also addresses the colonial period, Indigenous archaeology, and the role of museums in driving social change. Altogether, it stands as a key resource for understanding the current state of the field and contributing to the preservation of the continent's cultural heritage.

The printed edition (1,256 pages) is set for release in 2026 and can be pre-ordered at the following link: Oxford Handbook. The e-book version will be available through all major digital book platforms once released.
