Joining Forces to Protect and Promote Huaca Montegrande
Jaén, Cajamarca. Dr. Quirino Olivera, president of the Association for Scientific Research of the Peruvian Amazon (ASICAMPE), held important meetings with Peruvian government officials to promote the protection, conservation, and enhancement of the Montegrande Archaeological Monument, located in the province of Jaén, in the Cajamarca region.
During the first meeting, Olivera spoke with Fernando López Sánchez, Vice Minister of Cultural Heritage and Cultural Industries, about the actions needed to preserve this important archaeological site, which is approximately 6,000 years old and represents a valuable historical and cultural legacy of the Peruvian Upper Amazon.

Likewise, a meeting was held with Roger Valencia, Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, facilitated by Ambassador Javier Yépez, Executive Director of the Peru–Ecuador Binational Plan. The meeting aimed to promote investment in the tourism development of the Montegrande Archaeological Sanctuary, with the goal of strengthening its national and international profile.
Both meetings represent significant progress toward advancing a project that will help ensure the preservation of Montegrande and establish it as a landmark for archaeological heritage and sustainable tourism development in the Cajamarca region.

During these meetings, the president of ASICAMPE presented the authorities with the book Cultura Marañón: Archaeology of Early Cacao Symbolism in the Upper Peruvian Amazon. This publication contributes to disseminating archaeological research and highlighting the historical and cultural significance of this area of the country.
Through these initiatives, ASICAMPE reaffirms its commitment to scientific research, cultural heritage preservation, and the promotion of the Montegrande Archaeological Sanctuary as one of the particularly significant sites for understanding the ancient societies of the Peruvian Upper Amazon.
